How to Create a Beautiful Princess Room for Girls
Posted on 08. Feb, 2010 by Donald Duck in Princesses
Every princess needs a castle. Creating a princess room for your daughter is an opportunity for both of you to imagine, create, and bond together. All little girls know that Disney and the Disney princess are the experts on the proper décor for a little princess.
When creating a princess room, you first need to know the little princesses opinion. Who is her favorite princess? Is it a Disney Princess? Cinderella? Jasmine?
It may be a good idea to watch her favorite movie with her, to see what she adores the most. Pay attention to what it is your daughter likes most about her favorite princess. Is she attracted to the bright colors? Is it the companions of the princess? Or does she love the gowns that the princess wears?
After getting a general idea of what your daughter likes, pick a focal point for the room. Perhaps your daughter will have a canopy bed, or a framed Cinderella print, or a mural. The focal point should be placed in the room so that the eye is drawn to it when the door is opened.
From the focal point, you can expand to the rest of the room. What colors for the walls? The Disney Princesses seem to revolve around pink, blue, and yellow, but what color does your little girl love the most? Remember when painting to choose a shade lighter than the color you want since the color gets brighter the more space that is painted.
Choose bedding with color and find curtains to match. If you want the room to grow with your child, try choosing bedding without prints, since it can be used for any style of room. Use textures instead of prints: it makes the room into a more realistic pretend castle. Try sheer curtains or silk bedding. Little toes love shag rugs or area rugs. If your daughter wants her favorite Disney Princesses to the stars of her room, place a few printed pillows on the bed to bring out the theme.
Take your little princess shopping! If you let her help pick out the fabrics, she will feel personally invested and proud of the room. It also insures that she will like it!
Consider wear the play area will be. Does she need an area to store a Cinderella costume and other toys? What about a bookshelf? If you are unable to find matching wood furniture for these items, try painting them all a neutral white. You can even sand the edges after painting for a more rustic look.
Before arranging the room, make a model. A to-scale model on graph paper will suffice, or you can make a diorama from a cardboard box if you want your little princess to have a realistic view of the room before it is finished. Plot where the furniture will go. Is the focal point what the eye was drawn to when the door was first opened? Find out what your daughter thinks of the room. Make sure to get approval before you start remodeling the castle!
Depending on your child’s age, you may want to hang the pictures a little lower than usual. Typically interior designers suggest hanging pictures about 60’’ from the ground, or eye about level. Lower that standard a foot or two, so that way the pictures are within just about eye level for the child. Decorative molding can be lowered appropriately as well.
Creating a princess room can be a fun family experience, and creating a place for your child to imagine and feel at home it a priceless investment.
