Hollywood

About forty minutes from downtown, experience the magic of Hollywood. Your first stop should be Grauman’s Chinese Theater. You can get a tour of the original theater in all its glory, or actually see a movie in one of the theaters refurbished sections. Then step outside to see the hand and footprints of some of the biggest stars to ever live. Maybe your hands fit into the prints of Clark Gable or Harrison Ford. Stand where Shirley Temple once danced and Judy Garland sang. See the star walk of fame that lines the streets outside the theater. Just next-door is the Kodak Theater, where every year the Academy Awards are held. The Kodak shopping center is also a treat, offering luxury boutiques, fun dining experiences and even the popular Build-a-Bear workshop. Across the street from the Chinese Theater is the El Capitan, an old style movie theater with special pre movie shows and a classic pipe organ that is still played for the moviegoers. Next to the El Capitan, you can attend the filming of the Jimmy Kimmel Show. All the while, you can gaze at the Hollywood sign, day or night!

The first three that I have listed are for those who love beautiful scenery, and enjoy outdoor activities. Big Bear Lake offers beautiful mountain scenery, while Santa Catalina Island and Pismo Beach treat visitors to some of Southern California’s finest beaches. Now, here is some information on each of these areas to wet your vacation appetite.

Big Bear Lake

Big Bear Lake, California is a four seasons resort community surrounded by the San Bernardino National Forest. It is approximately 80 miles northeast of Los Angeles, California. The area offers a wide range of cabin rentals, and vacation rentals for year-round family fun. Activities include boating and water sports, fishing, hiking, horseback riding, golfing, skiing, snowboarding and many other fun family activities.

Santa Catalina Island

The island is located just off the coast of Los Angeles across the San Pedro Channel. Passenger ferries depart from Orange County in Newport Beach and Dana Point. Glass bottom boats tour the shipwrecks and reefs in the area, and scuba diving is popular in the clear water. Other activities include snorkeling, kayaking, fishing, horseback riding, world-class golf, para-sailing or relaxing on the beach.

Pismo State Beach

Pismo Beach is located near San Luis Obispo. This park offers a wide variety of activities: hiking, swimming, clam digging, surf fishing, camping, and bird watching. Four restaurants are within 2 blocks of the campground. Pismo Beach has plenty of fun for the entire family.

Disneyland

What list of California vacation ideas could be complete without mentioning Disneyland? You could spend your entire trip at Disneyland and still probably not see everything. A trip to Disney is a vacation highlight for both young and old alike. Disneyland is located near Los Angeles. While visiting the area you may also want to visit Disney’s California Adventure Park, and nearby Universal Studios.

San Diego

Everyone that I have ever talked to that has visited San Diego has enjoyed it. It offers beautiful year-round weather, and there are many things to see and do while you are there. The San Diego Zoo is one of the best in the world. Be sure and visit Sea World while you are there for some fun and excitement. Also, visit a nearby beach, go shopping in Old Town San Diego, or take a stroll through Balboa Park.

Whether you visit Big Bear Lake, Disneyland, San Diego, or one of these other destinations, it will truly be a memorable trip. The main thing is to make time for these special outings with your family, have fun and relax, and create lasting memories. Start planning that special family trip – you deserve it. With it’s great weather, and abundant natural and man-made attractions, it’s no wonder tourists flock to this west coast state.


One of the top reasons for visiting California is simply the land itself. Obviously, miles and miles of beautiful beaches draw thousands of visitors each year. Looking more inland, consider the Redwood State and National Parks. Who hasn’t seen pictures of people looking miniature when surrounded by super-sized ferns and trees of unreal size–up to 350 ft, and not wanted to go there? Beyond the Redwoods, Yosemite National Park is said to be unmatched anywhere in the world for natural beauty. With 3 of the highest waterfalls on earth, the biggest granite monolith anywhere, and acres and acres of vast wilderness, Yosemite is a big draw for visitors from around the world. Moving toward the Nevada border, visitors flock to Lake Tahoe, one of the most magnificent bodies of fresh water. It holds almost 40 trillion gallons of water, making it the largest alpine lake in North America. Lake Tahoe’s water is 99.9 percent pure; it’s so clear that a white 10 inch dinner plate is visible even when submerged 75 feet.


California’s climate is another great reason so many people visit the state. With an average of 354 days of sunshine a year, the weather is generally warm and dry year round in California. Along the southern coast, sea breezes keep the temperature lower in the summer and warmer in the winter than places more inland where the climate is high desert. Along the central and northern coast, average temperatures range from low 40s to mid 50s for lows and mid 50s to low 70s for highs.


If you’re looking for something more high minded to do, California has over a thousand registered historical and art sites to visit. In San Diego, Mission San Diego de Alcala, the first mission built in California, still functions as an active Catholic parish and is a beautiful place to explore and learn about history. Other historic missions dot the state. The California State Railroad museum in Sacramento is a popular stop for visitors. At one point this station was the terminus for the Transcontinental Railroad, and today houses many restored locomotives and railway cars among other attractions. Another museum not to be missed is the J. Paul Getty Museum in L.A. Not only is the actual museum building an architectural landmark, but its permanent collection includes Van Gogh’s “Irises,” a spectacular piece of art.


Of course California is full of many man-made attractions as well. Southern California is dotted with theme parks such as Disney Land, Disney’s California Adventure, Sea World, The San Diego Zoo, San Diego’s Wild Animal Park, Knott’s Berry Farm, Legoland, the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk, Six Flags, and Universal Studios Hollywood. These parks attract thousands of visitors each year and for good reason: they’re fun!


Finally, one of the biggest reasons people flock to California is Wine Country. Multiple magazines and plenty of tour and travel groups are dedicated to this region in Northern California because so many people love it. Napa and Sonoma are two of the biggest and best wine-producing regions in the world, and they cater to the traveler with win tastings and outstanding restaurants. Beyond the vineyard tours and wine tasting, there are many spas which feature vineyard inspired treatments with grape-seed products or local mud. If that weren’t enough, the scenery is fantastic, and scenic back roads for hikers, bikers, and cars abound.

Situated in Orange County, 28 miles southwest of Los Angeles, Anaheim is home to the world famous Disneyland, as well as the reigning Ice Hockey champions the Mighty Ducks and Major League’s 2002 World Series winners, the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.

Founded in 1857 by 50 German families, Anaheim literally means “Ana’s home”, named after the nearby Santa Ana River, and the German word for home – ‘heim’. The families that founded the city originally hailed from Bavaria. They specialised in growing and farming grapes, as well as making wine. However, in the 1880s an insect pestilence wiped out their entire grape crop. Unable to prevent the destruction of their crop the farmers picked up the pieces and diversified into growing walnuts, lemons and – of course – oranges instead.

Benefiting from the great California climate and steady immigration, Anaheim continued to grow during the 1900s, deriving the majority of its income from farming and finance. But the city underwent its biggest expansion after Walt Disney decided to make his theme park dream a reality and base it in Anaheim. Disney opened their theme park in 1955; the ground upon which it is built consists of 160 acres of former walnut and orange groves, and you can still spot plenty of orange trees dotted throughout the park. The phenomenal success of the Disneyland Park over the last 50 years has led to the Walt Disney Company becoming Anaheim’s largest employer. In addition, the city now derives most of its income directly from tourism.

In 2001, the Disneyland Park was further expanded by the addition of Disney’s California Adventure. The latest park is a haven for thrill-seekers offering the nail-biting Twilight Zone Tower of Terror and the super-fast California Screamin’ roller-coaster rides amongst many others. In addition, the Disney Resort also boasts Downtown Disney, which includes the ESPN Zone and House of Blues amongst its attractions. At the ESPN Zone you can take in the latest sporting activities on the big screen while enjoying traditional American edibles and drinks, while The House of Blues frequently attracts big name acts to its illustrious stage.

Many companies choose to have conventions at the Anaheim Convention Center; the biggest on the West Coast of America. The obvious attraction of having Disneyland and Disney’s California Adventure on the doorstep means that while taking care of business at the conference, a delegate’s family can enjoy the many attractions of the park. Indeed, at many hotels in Anaheim, you will find family parties mixing business with pleasure – a fantastic solution for all involved!
