Live the magic of Disneyland and Disney World all year long with this enchanting game that brings the Magic Kingdom into your own living room! Travel along the 3D game board, visiting such famed attractions as the Pirates of the Caribbean, Space Mountain, the Sleeping Beauty Castle, and Mickey’s Country House. Try to get autographs from Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck, but watch out for opponents who will try to send you on a wild goose chase around the park. The first player to visit all of their attractions and make it back to the park entrance, wins the game! It’s a magical game the whole family can enjoy. Comes with Magic Kingdom Game Board, 6 Plastic Attractions with Backgrounds, 5 Family Pawns and Stands, 1 Mickey Mouse Pawn, 1 Donald Duck Pawn, 2 Dice, 30 Attraction Cards, 34 Event Cards, 2 Autograph Cards, Label Sheet, and Game Instructions. For 2 – 5 Players, Ages 6 and Up.Disney has always been masterful at two key initiatives: producing memorable children’s entertainment and marketing that same entertainment with overwhelming force. In this promotional board game, players attempt to move a family around a Disney theme park, stopping at various points along the way including Space Mountain, Pirates of the Caribbean, Frontierland, and the Country Bears. Mickey, Donald, Peter Pan, Snow White, the Lion King characters, and various other familiar characters make appearances. As a game, it may deepen a child’s love for their Disney brand friends or simply reinforce the feelings that child already has. The game is also a bit complex and may be too tricky for younger children although if they play on a team with older kids or adults, they should be fine. Parents considering this game should be prepared to answer the question “when can we go to a REAL Disney park?” –Charlie Williams >>Read More

Part biography and part cultural analysis, Steven Watts’s The Magic Kingdom sheds new light on the cultural icon of “Uncle Walt.” Watts also digs deeply into Disney’s private life, investigating his roles as husband, father, and brother and providing fresh insight into his peculiar psyche – his genuine folksiness and warmth, his domineering treatment of colleagues and friends, his deepest prejudices and passions. Full of colorful sketches of daily life at the Disney Studio and tales about the creation of Disneyland and Disney World, The Magic Kingdom offers a definitive view of one of the most influential Americans of the twentieth century. >>Read More

Kingdom Hearts Re: Chain of Memories bridges the gap between the original Kingdom Hearts and the sequel, Kingdom Hearts II. Chain of Memories from Square Enix for the Sony PlayStation 2 is a complete 3D remake of the original Game Boy Advance release from 2004. This “bridge” installment was released in Japan in 2007 as part of the Kingdom Hearts II Final Mix+ compilation before finally making its way to North America. Combined with the card battle system of the original Game Boy Advance release, Chain of Memories for PS2 presents Kingdom Hearts fans with an entirely new gameplay experience. .caption { font-family: Verdana, Helvetica neue, Arial, serif; font-size: 10px; font-weight: bold; font-style: italic; } ul.indent { list-style: inside disc; text-indent: -15px; } table.callout { font-family: verdana; font-size: 11px; line-height: 1. 3em; } td.vgoverview { height: 125px; background: #9DC4D8 url(http://images.amazon.com/images/G/01/electronics/detail-page/callout-bg.png) repeat-x; border-left: 1px solid #999999; border-right: 1px solid #999999; padding-left: 20px; padding-right: 20px; padding-bottom: 10px; width: 250px; font-family: verdana; font-size: 12px; } This remake of the GBA original features improved graphics. View larger. Donald and Goofy will lead you to spectacular adventures. View larger. You’ll meet and get advice from many familiar faces. View larger. The Prologue The story begins with Sora, Donald and Goofy wandering through endless fields. Eventually, they come to a crossroad. Standing in the crossroads, Sora gazes up at the night sky and thinks of his lost friends. From the distance, a mysterious man approaches from one of the roads. “Ahead lies something you need,” he says, “but to claim it you must lose something dear.” The man vanishes, revealing a single path that leads to the eery Castle Oblivion, which resembles a girl’s drawing. The Story After this encounter, Sora, Donald, and Goofy go their separate ways. Soon, on a night when his island home is besieged by a mysterious storm, Sora is whisked away to an unfamiliar burg known as Traverse Town. There he meets Donald and Goofy, and learns that there are strange things happening in the world. Donald and Goofy set off to look for their missing king, and Sora joins them to search for his lost friend, Riku. After a long journey that takes them across numerous worlds, Sora and friends finally find Riku and the lost king. But to save all the worlds, Sora must use his Keyblade to close the door to darkness, even though Riku and the king are on the other side. Believing the king’s parting words — there will always be a door to the light — Sora locks the door, and the trio sets out on yet another journey. The Characters The cast of Chain of Memories combines Kingdom Hearts characters with familiar Disney faces. Sora, is a 14-year-old boy and the hero of this tale. Although a little naive, Sora has an uncommon sense of justice. On his journey, Sora is accompanied by Donald, a court wizard who shares a striking resemblance to Donald the Duck of Disney fame, and the clumsy, easy-going captain of the Disney Castle Royal Knights, Goofy. Other characters include the mysterious, shrouded man from the crossroads; Sora’s lost friend, Riku, a 15-year-old boy who is cool and collected; the lost King, who bares a striking resemblance to Mickey Mouse; and Kairi, a 14-year-old girl who’s friends with Sora and Riku. Almost more strange than the man at the crossroads, a mysterious girl, Namine, draws pictures inside Castle Oblivion under close surveillance of an evil organization. As the story alludes, she may hold the key to Sora’s most special memories. >>Read More

After his success of ‘Orlando: The Family Guide’, Juz has now written about another perfect family vacation destination – Disneyland Resort Paris. This has become a firm favourite with the author who is now a committed annual pass holder and shareholder of this European Disney Jewel. Rather than the usual books of Disneyland that also cover Paris and further a field, Juz concentrates only on the Disneyland Paris Resort and surrounding hotels. The book covers all the attractions and rides; each with a family age and fun rating. Juz also turns his attention on where the best places to eat are within Disney Resorts and how to meet your kid’s favourite characters at meal time rather than having to endure the scrums in the parks. ‘Disneyland Paris: The Family Guide’ helps you get the most from your vacation both in terms of fun and cash saving ideas. Space Mountain opened in 1977, invigorating a decade-old Tomorrowland as Disneyland’s second roller coaster. The idea for Anaheim’s ride originated in the mid 1960s, during Walt Disney’s lifetime, as a way to energize the aging Tomorrowland. The project was shelved until the success of Space Mountain in Florida. After two years of …

How high? How fast? How’d they do that? The top favorites at any Disney Theme park always include the roller coasters. The Disney Mountains: Imagineering at Its Peak will tell you that and more-not only about the current Disney mountain range and its show enhancements, but about mountains unclimbed and mountains yet to be.
Celebrate Walt Disney and his magical vision with this look back at several of the most memorable hours from his groundbreaking television shows. As its friendly, approachable host, Disney endeared himself to millions and became much more than an icon for family entertainment. He became Uncle Walt. Join Walt as he celebrates the rededication of Disneyland with a parade of celebrities and guest stars, the fourth anniversary of his weekly show featuring a surprise party arranged by the Mouseketeers, and a tenth anniversary program showcasing some of his talented Imagineers at work. And in a rare interview, Diane Disney Miller shares warm and personal memories of growing up with the man we all admired from afar.More than a time-capsule treasure for Disney buffs, this two-disc set will warm the nostalgic hearts of baby boomers who eagerly looked forward to their weekly visits with “Uncle Walt” Disney. As the host of his anthology series, Disneyland (later Walt Disney Presents, then The Wonderful World of Color), Disney presented classic cartoons and original programs, but he also gave starry-eyed viewers a privileged, behind-the-scenes look inside his magic kingdom, from the construction of his magnificent theme park to animators at work. Disneyland transformed Disney into the face of Disney Studios, a pied piper, according to film historian Leonard Maltin, who introduces the features on each disc. This collection of episodes features Disney at his most avuncular. “Where Do the Stories Come From” (1956) is a fun exploration of where Disney artists find their inspiration. “Fourth Anniversary Show” (1951) charts the development of the Disney featurette, Peter and the Wolf, but then becomes a surprise-party musical extravaganza for Disney hosted by his Mouseketeers, and featuring appearances by Guy “Zorro” Williams and Fess “Davy Crockett” Parker. Long-thought lost, “Kodak Presents Disneyland ‘59,” is a black and white kinescope recording of a live, 90-min. television special (compete with entertaining Kodak commercials featuring Ozzie and Harriet Nelson and sons) that serves to introduce three new attractions to Disneyland: the Nautilus submarine ride, the Monorail and the Matterhorn. Look for rising stars Clint Eastwood and Dennis Hopper among parade participants. “Backstage Party” (1961) is a visit to the set of Disney’s production of Babes in Toyland, with appearances by the film’s stars, including Annette Funicello, Ed Wynn, and Ray Bolger. “Disneyland 10th Anniversary” (1965), previously released on the now-out-of-print Disneyland U.S.A. set, introduces the Haunted Mansion, Pirates of the Caribbean, and It’s a Small World rides, and shows how “space-age” technology was used to create the Enchanted Tiki Room. Disc 2’s extras include a true rarity, a 1962 Cinemascope film presentation created to accompany a Disney Radio City Music Hall stage show. Another delight is “I Captured the King of the Leprechauns,” a 1959 Disneyland episode tied to the release of the feature Darby O’Gill and the Little People (and included as a bonus feature on that DVD). This whimsical bit of blarney follows Disney to Ireland in search of “the little people.” Movie tough guy Pat O’Brien sends him off with a charming song about leprechauns, just a small sample of these episodes’ endearing and enduring hokey charms. –Donald Liebenson >>Read More

On October 1, 1982, The Walt Disney Company opened its EPCOT Center to the world, heralding changes that would take the Disney property in Florida from a mere theme park to a world-class resort destination. Authors Steve Alcorn and David Green were there, as employees of Disney’s WED Imagineering. “Building a Better Mouse” tells the tale of the “hundreds of mostly young, mostly bright and all embarrassingly idealistic people” who worked on Epcot, and gives a unique insider’s perspective on what it was like to be in the trenches as a Disney Imagineer in the early 1980s, from pixie dusting – when new employees are indoctrinated into all things Disney – through the craziness of the engineering design process, right up until the last frantic dash to opening day. It is a breathtaking, breezy, E-ticket ride of a book, required reading for both hard-core Disneyphiles and people interested in the business side of themed entertainment. >>Read More

If anyone could corner the millennium, Disney could. In presenting the theme music to its millennium celebration at Epcot Center in Florida, the megacorporation attempts a grand, musical year-2000 salute. Naturally, World Millennium Celebration weaves plenty of fiery brass, warm sting passages, stirring voices, and a mix of space romance and Earth adventure into the fabric of this fantasy work. Executive Music Producer Steve Skorija’s task seems to be providing a backdrop for live performance, a scrim to unfurl behind the spectacle. And in doing so, the themes “Reflections of Earth,” “We Go On,” “Tapestry of Nations,” “Promise,” and “Celebrate the Future Hand in Hand” (complete as a gospel version as well) have an “Up with People” undercurrent that is ambiguous even as it is mildly diverting. On those merits, Millennium Celebration succeeds as a score. But for sheer entertainment value, the CD needs to give us more of the legendary mouse’s magic and less of its roar. –Martin Keller >>Read More

Sing, dance, and play along with your favorite Disney songs! It’s fun and easy as you read the on-screen lyrics and join your favorite characters in their most memorable musical moments! Sing along to the happiest songs on earth at the happiest place on earth — Disneyland! Your host, Mr. Owl, invites you to celebrate a musical day with all your favorite Disney friends. Join Mickey and Minnie for fun and thrills as they hustle and bustle behind the scenes at the park! Then get a front-row seat on some of the wildest rides, like Star Tours, Splash Mountain and the Matterhorn, with Chip ‘n’ Dale, Roger Rabbit, and a Magic Kingdom filled with sing-along adventures. It’s easy to see why this is one of the bestselling sing-alongs from Disney: it plays like the ultimate family-vacation home movie. Instead of fleeting glimpses of your favorite characters on your home videos of Disneyland, this 27-minute episode showcases Mickey, Goofy, Pluto, and their friends hanging out with kids inside the Magic Kingdom singing (well, their lips don’t move) such popular songs as ” Zip a Dee Do Dah,” “It’s a Small World,” and “Step in Time” with the lyrics appearing on screen for youngsters. The one drawback is the video was shot in 1990, so none of the newer rides are shown, and worse yet, some older rides seen aren’t around anymore (“Mom, why didn’t we go on the submarine?”). Perhaps that isn’t a drawback since, despite the age, and some truly unknown songs (“Making Memories”), the program continues to be popular. –Doug Thomas >>Read More

The Splash Mountain project was not originally approved, due to the cost. The Imagineers on the team mounted an internal publicity campaign, taking turns carrying large (4′ x 6′) artistic drawings of the project around the Imagineering offices and pitching the project (and its technical details) to anyone who would listen.

I went on a trip to California a while ago and didn’t have the money on me to buy a picture of myself on Splash Mountain (I think that’s the name). I really liked the picture, but never got the chance to buy it. I’m assuming over 2 months after the ride is too late to purchase copies, but does Disneyland keep copies of the pictures taken when most people are screaming during a ride? If so, for how long?

Thanks in advance for any answers.

Spanning the entire history of the park, from its founding more than 50 years ago to the present, this fascinating book profiles 500 attractions, restaurants, stores, events, and significant people from the history of Disneyland®. Each of the main entries in the book examines in detail the history of a Disneyland® landmark, including how many of the most popular attractions went through several incarnations before becoming what they are today—Tomorrowland’s Hall of Chemistry and Hall of Aluminum were transformed into the groundbreaking Adventure Thru Inner Space in 1967, and then became the popular ride Star Tours 20 years later. Read about unbuilt concepts, including Rock Candy Mountain and Chinatown, and delight in fascinating trivia about the park, such as ride statistics and attendance records. With a daily list of events, openings, and closings in the park’s history, a yearly summary of attractions that came and went, simple and clear maps that correspond to the book’s 500 entries, and sidebars with additional information on each ride, this is a comprehensive and entertaining book overflowing with detail on the most-renovated, most-loved, and most-visited theme park in the world. >>Read More

A special presentation of four Disneyland television specials – The Disneyland Story, Dateline Disneyland, Operation Disneyland, Disneyland After Dark – plus The Disneyland 10th Anniversary Show, all originally broadcast between 1955 and 1970, and hosted by Walt Disney himself. Also includes additional archival footage of Disneyland’s opening day and other rare materials. Introduction by Leonard Maltin. To finance Disneyland he wanted to build, Walt Disney turned to the new medium of television. As host Leonard Maltin notes on this two- disc set of televised specials for the amusement park, Disney used the series to promote it, “and no one seemed to mind.” ABC agreed to invest in return for a weekly one-hour program. The “Disneyland” TV show premiered on October 27, 1954: “Disneyland Story” introduced the park and its various lands, which would be the subject of future programs. The opening-day special, “Dateline Disneyland” (July 17, 1955), attracted an estimated audience of 90 million–virtually every television household in America. Hosted by Art Linkletter, Robert Cummings, and Ronald Reagan, the live broadcast includes such unplanned moments as Linkletter searching frantically for a microphone in Fantasyland. The Tenth Anniversary show (January 3, 1965) features cameos of Mary Blair and Marc Davis, two celebrated animation artists. Home movie footage of Walt pacing off distances at the barren site in Anaheim is intercut with peeks at forthcoming attractions. “Disneyland After Dark” (April 15, 1962) offers performances by Annette Funicello, Bobby Burgess, Bobby Rydell, Louis Armstrong, and a prepubescent quartet of Osmond Brothers. A must-have set for Disneyland buffs, Disney collectors, and nostalgic baby boomers. –Charles Solomon >>Read More

You have probably heard a few “interesting facts” about Disneyland over the years. Perhaps you’ve heard that Walt Disney kept an apartment on Main Street? Or that there is a secret, members-only club in New Orleans Square? It’s all true… but these are only two of the interesting facts pointed out in “101 Things You Never Knew About Disneyland.” Many of the stories here deal with more obscure, yet equally interesting, histories of Disneyland. In fact, the majority of the material comes straight from interviews with the Imagineers who helped to build, maintain, and revitalize Disneyland. The book pays special attention to the inside jokes and hidden references to Disneyland’s past, as these samples illustrate: Do you know which play on words pays tribute to a former Mexican restaurant at a certain site? Do you know how Tarzan’s Treehouse honors its predecessor in two different ways? Do you know what is so unusual about the decorations atop “It’s a Small World”? Do you know why one palm tree in Adventureland is special? Do you know what the sign says at the bottom of Splash Mountain’s big drop? Do you know which pumpkin is an homage to a Disneyland official? It’s a certainty that you haven’t heard all these stories before. Although there are 101 such highlighted stories, each comes with a fuller description and is followed by a second story that is thematically related, so this volume really offers 202 Things you haven’t heard about Disneyland before. You will find these facts delightful and unforgettable once you’ve heard them! >>Read More

This compilation offers fascinating insight into Walt Disney’s enormous undertaking through the documentary “The Secrets, Stories, and Magic of Disneyland,” the retrospective “Operation Disneyland,” three episodes from “The Wonderful World of Color” television series, one “People and Places” episode, and a collection of historical time-lapse construction footage from Disneyland in Anaheim, California. Leonard Maltin and Julie Andrews provide an introduction to the 80-minute “Secrets, Stories, and Magic” which details Walt Disney’s initial vision for Disneyland, considered to be “Walt’s Folly” by many Disney Studio employees, and the various stages of the park’s planning and construction culminating in its grand opening on July 17, 1955. Extensive new and vintage footage address virtually every aspect of the conception and realization of Disneyland from the original site plan and concept art to the tight construction schedule, logistical problems during construction and on opening day, the development of new enhanced motion vehicle technology for the rides, and the shelved ideas that make up the “Disneyland that never was.” Extensive interview footage includes Walt Disney, George Lucas, Roy Disney, artist Herb Ryman, retired president of Disneyland Jack Lindquist, composer Richard Sherman, and many others. After an interactive Disneyland trivia game that’s none-to-easy even in the beginner mode, it’s on to a restored version of the 1956 “People and Places: Disneyland USA” episode which highlights Walt Disney’s goal that Disneyland serve as a place of enlightenment, happiness, and the pursuit of fun and takes viewers on a slow-paced exploration of the five areas of Disneyland. Modern audiences might be inclined to condemn this particular feature as a 42-minute-long Disneyland commercial, but in 1956 it functioned more as an exploration of a distant place that many around the world had never had the opportunity to visit. Disc two begins with “Operation Disneyland,” a 14-minute black and white documentary produced for ABC closed circuit television which looks at the technical aspects of broadcasting the opening ceremonies of Disneyland on live television. Never intended for public viewing, the program offers an interesting and historically valuable look back at the mechanics of live television in the 1950’s. Next are three episodes of Walt Disney’s weekly program “The Wonderful World of Color.” “The Golden Horseshoe Revue” features the 10,000th vaudeville-inspired performance at Disneyland’s The Golden Horseshoe Saloon with Betty Taylor, Wally Boag, Gene Sheldon, Ed Wynn, and former Mickey Mouse Club Mouseketeer Annette Funicello. “Disneyland Goes to the World’s Fair” details Disney’s contributions to the New York World’s Fair of 1964-1965 including the creation of “It’s A Small World” for UNICEF, “Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln,” and the “Primeval World” audio-animatronic dinosaurs currently on exhibit in the Disneyland Railroad. “Disneyland Around the Seasons” celebrates Disneyland’s 11th year with a look at special holiday programming at Disneyland. Finally, footage from several time-lapse cameras scattered throughout Disneyland during the park’s construction is presented with narration by Tony Baxter from Disney Imagineering, and Ed Hobbleman and Walter Magnuson from the Disney Studio Inventory Group. Just about everything one could ever want to know about the history of Disneyland is right here in this thorough Disney collection. –Tami Horiuchi >>Read More

Whoa! Dude, this is so rad you won’t believe it! It’s a 42-minute IMAX movie made by MacGillivray Freeman Films, the same guys who made that Everest film, and it is awesome. They filmed all kinds of cool stuff that people do in California–you know, like skysurfing, extreme surfing (dude, wait till you check out the size of these waves!), climbing monster sequoia trees, and walking up to the top of the Golden Gate Bridge. There’s a piece about Walt Disney and the first Mickey Mouse cartoon, too. And even if you don’t have an IMAX theater in your house, you can still see how amazing the film techniques they used to shoot this stuff are (in fact, there’s a 24-minute documentary explaining how they did it). And to top it off, the narration is read by Jimmy Smits, and there are a few tunes by Lindsey Buckingham of Fleetwood Mac. Man, this is sweet. –Sam Graham >>Read More
