Spanning the entire history of the park, from its founding more than 50 years ago to the present, this fascinating book profiles 500 attractions, restaurants, stores, events, and significant people from the history of Disneyland®. Each of the main entries in the book examines in detail the history of a Disneyland® landmark, including how many of the most popular attractions went through several incarnations before becoming what they are today—Tomorrowland’s Hall of Chemistry and Hall of Aluminum were transformed into the groundbreaking Adventure Thru Inner Space in 1967, and then became the popular ride Star Tours 20 years later. Read about unbuilt concepts, including Rock Candy Mountain and Chinatown, and delight in fascinating trivia about the park, such as ride statistics and attendance records. With a daily list of events, openings, and closings in the park’s history, a yearly summary of attractions that came and went, simple and clear maps that correspond to the book’s 500 entries, and sidebars with additional information on each ride, this is a comprehensive and entertaining book overflowing with detail on the most-renovated, most-loved, and most-visited theme park in the world. >>Read More

You have probably heard a few “interesting facts” about Disneyland over the years. Perhaps you’ve heard that Walt Disney kept an apartment on Main Street? Or that there is a secret, members-only club in New Orleans Square? It’s all true… but these are only two of the interesting facts pointed out in “101 Things You Never Knew About Disneyland.” Many of the stories here deal with more obscure, yet equally interesting, histories of Disneyland. In fact, the majority of the material comes straight from interviews with the Imagineers who helped to build, maintain, and revitalize Disneyland. The book pays special attention to the inside jokes and hidden references to Disneyland’s past, as these samples illustrate: Do you know which play on words pays tribute to a former Mexican restaurant at a certain site? Do you know how Tarzan’s Treehouse honors its predecessor in two different ways? Do you know what is so unusual about the decorations atop “It’s a Small World”? Do you know why one palm tree in Adventureland is special? Do you know what the sign says at the bottom of Splash Mountain’s big drop? Do you know which pumpkin is an homage to a Disneyland official? It’s a certainty that you haven’t heard all these stories before. Although there are 101 such highlighted stories, each comes with a fuller description and is followed by a second story that is thematically related, so this volume really offers 202 Things you haven’t heard about Disneyland before. You will find these facts delightful and unforgettable once you’ve heard them! >>Read More

Also includes additional archival footage of Disneyland’s opening day and other rare materials. Introduction by Leonard Maltin. To finance Disneyland he wanted to build, Walt Disney turned to the new medium of television. As host Leonard Maltin notes on this two- disc set of televised specials for the amusement park, Disney used the series to promote it, “and no one seemed to mind.” ABC agreed to invest in return for a weekly one-hour program. The “Disneyland” TV show premiered on October 27, 1954: “Disneyland Story” introduced the park and its various lands, which would be the subject of future programs. The opening-day special, “Dateline Disneyland” (July 17, 1955), attracted an estimated audience of 90 million–virtually every television household in America. Hosted by Art Linkletter, Robert Cummings, and Ronald Reagan, the live broadcast includes such unplanned moments as Linkletter searching frantically for a microphone in Fantasyland. The Tenth Anniversary show (January 3, 1965) features cameos of Mary Blair and Marc Davis, two celebrated animation artists. Home movie footage of Walt pacing off distances at the barren site in Anaheim is intercut with peeks at forthcoming attractions. “Disneyland After Dark” (April 15, 1962) offers performances by Annette Funicello, Bobby Burgess, Bobby Rydell, Louis Armstrong, and a prepubescent quartet of Osmond Brothers.

When planning a holiday, all of us hope for it to be fun and exciting, and so a trip to the USA is not complete without visiting the Walt Disney World. You must have heard it from almost everyone who’s been there and haven’t stopped raving about the place and their affordable Walt Disney vacation. Just like a visit to China or Great Barrier Reef in Australia is a must do, this is also one such place.

Ever since we were small, we have enjoyed the make believe world where teapots could talk and bears licking on honey or maybe the little mermaid singing while sitting on the rock. Wouldn’t it be one amazing vacation to watch all of this in real and see how the theme park comes to life with the fireworks show and the Mickey Mouse parades?

You can choose from the range of Disney vacation club locations to pick up out a time slot perfect for you or stay in a private resort that is all yours. These are within driving distance from all the key attractions like The Magic Kingdom and Cinderella Castle and the Epcot Park. If you have had enough of the rides, you can relax at the entertainment centers showing Arabian Nights while you enjoy a lovely dinner at one of the restaurants. And for those who want to get away from it all for a while, they can take a drive down to any of the beaches, like the Cocoa beach, which is less than an hour’s drive away from Disney World, to refresh, rejuvenate and come back for more.

If you hate standing in long lines, waiting for your turn and then be told it will take another hour before your turn comes, you will require a Fastpass. This concept called Fastpass which is available for almost all the rides, and if you want to avail them you need to check the counters and timings mentioned on them. This is one way of cutting across long queues and getting to your ride directly. But you cannot pick up more than one Fastpass at a time, so read up before you pick a pass. Also make sure everyone in your group fits the bill, regarding height and health conditions to enjoy your affordable Disney vacation in all it’s glory.

While visiting the Magical Kingdom section of the park, you can make a bee line for the Big Thunder mountain railway. If you have your Fastpass, you will get a seat on the roller coaster ride right away. In case rockets are what hold your fantasy, head straight to the Tomorrowland and get lost in Buzz Lightyear’s space ranger spin where you shoot at the lightening bolts. And if you have been dreaming of Pirates of the Caribbean the whole time, its time to visit Captain Jack Sparrow’s Pirate class for a game of sword fight or lessons in Pirate’s language. And when you spot the boat ride next door, that is where the Jungle cruise starts.

Take your family on a virtual trip around the world. This book is more than a what to see and where to stay touring plan; it is the guide book that will bring the exhibits to life for you and your children. Take your family on a trip to Norway to see the Viking ship, but first study Viking history. Did you know that the Norwegian king was given the Gospel on a trip to England, which led to the end of the Viking era. But, what would the worlds greatest shipbuilders and sailors do for a living if they weren’t Vikings? They used their skills to build churches, some of which are still standing today. An example of a Stave church can be seen in the Norwegian pavilion. Take your family on a trip to Mexico and shop for your favorite pinata in the marketplace, but first study the history of this game. Spanish missionaries arrived to find the Mayans playing a game that they then used to help illustrate Biblical truths. Did you know? Try it! Get into hands on activities while making pretzels together (recipe included), while you study German foods, then try even more authentic recipes at the Biergarten. Moms: Use this book of unit studies to impress dad. It was researched and written by a Christian home schooling family and would be a great asset to any curriculum, with or without a visit to Epcot (although that would be a world class field trip to top off the school year). Dads: Buy this book for yourself and read it before you go. Impress your family with your expertise in every pavilion! Then, you can pass the book on to the kids when you get home from your vacation, so they can do the hundreds of activities in this guide book, and learn even more. Not only will they learn more, the vacation experience will be extended throughout the year, as you say, remember when we saw this?… let’s learn more about that. >>Read More

Are you looking for some great vacation ideas? Consider a trip to Southern California for your next family vacation. While Southern California covers a large area, and there are many fun things to do, here are some great vacation ideas that are definitely worth considering for your next trip.

The first three that I have listed are for those who love beautiful scenery, and enjoy outdoor activities. Big Bear Lake offers beautiful mountain scenery, while Santa Catalina Island and Pismo Beach treat visitors to some of Southern California’s finest beaches. Now, here is some information on each of these areas to wet your vacation appetite.

Big Bear Lake

Big Bear Lake, California is a four seasons resort community surrounded by the San Bernardino National Forest. It is approximately 80 miles northeast of Los Angeles, California. The area offers a wide range of cabin rentals, and vacation rentals for year-round family fun. Activities include boating and water sports, fishing, hiking, horseback riding, golfing, skiing, snowboarding and many other fun family activities.

Santa Catalina Island

The island is located just off the coast of Los Angeles across the San Pedro Channel. Passenger ferries depart from Orange County in Newport Beach and Dana Point. Glass bottom boats tour the shipwrecks and reefs in the area, and scuba diving is popular in the clear water. Other activities include snorkeling, kayaking, fishing, horseback riding, world-class golf, para-sailing or relaxing on the beach.

Pismo State Beach

Pismo Beach is located near San Luis Obispo. This park offers a wide variety of activities: hiking, swimming, clam digging, surf fishing, camping, and bird watching. Four restaurants are within 2 blocks of the campground. Pismo Beach has plenty of fun for the entire family.

Disneyland

What list of California vacation ideas could be complete without mentioning Disneyland? You could spend your entire trip at Disneyland and still probably not see everything. A trip to Disney is a vacation highlight for both young and old alike. Disneyland is located near Los Angeles. While visiting the area you may also want to visit Disney’s California Adventure Park, and nearby Universal Studios.

San Diego

Everyone that I have ever talked to that has visited San Diego has enjoyed it. It offers beautiful year-round weather, and there are many things to see and do while you are there. The San Diego Zoo is one of the best in the world. Be sure and visit Sea World while you are there for some fun and excitement. Also, visit a nearby beach, go shopping in Old Town San Diego, or take a stroll through Balboa Park.

Whether you visit Big Bear Lake, Disneyland, San Diego, or one of these other destinations, it will truly be a memorable trip. The main thing is to make time for these special outings with your family, have fun and relax, and create lasting memories. Start planning that special family trip – you deserve it. Have a safe and wonderful trip!

There’s a piece about Walt Disney and the first Mickey Mouse cartoon, too. And even if you don’t have an IMAX theater in your house, you can still see how amazing the film techniques they used to shoot this stuff are (in fact, there’s a 24-minute documentary explaining how they did it).

When it comes to planning the family vacation nothing can quite compare to the fun and excitement a trip to Disneyland can generate. Of course for some planning any vacation, even to the Magic Kingdom can be quite a stressful experience. When you do start planning your vacation you need to decide if you want to make all the arrangements yourself or have a professional do it for you.

You have a couple of options if you don’t want to plan your trip yourself. You can have a travel agent make all the necessary arrangements but if you really want the complete Disneyland experience you should consider using the Disney Vacation Planning Services. They know everything about planning a trip to Disneyland and can help you create a vacation that fits your family and budget.

On the other hand if you wish to plan your own vacation then here are some things to consider while making your travel plans.

The first thing you need to decide is when you plan on traveling to Disneyland. This may not seem like it’s that important but the Disney theme parks odder different themes and entertainment options at different times of the year. The best place to learn what is going on at different times of the year is to visit the Disney website.

Once you have your dates at the park set you’ll need to set up travel arrangement and hotel reservations. Do you want to stay right at the park in one of Disney’s hotels that offer many activities such as dining with many of the Disney characters? Or would you rather stay in a hotel nearby so you can enjoy some of the surrounding are? Once you have decided on these parts of your itinerary there a few more considerations you need to be aware of.

Because of its popularity eating at Disneyland can sometimes involve a lot of waiting. It is recommended that you make reservations at the more popular restaurants before you leave on your vacation.

When you make your reservations and ticket arrangements you will probably receive an information packet with a map of Disneyland in the mail. This is a good time to familiarize yourself with the layout of the park so that you can plan which attractions you most want to visit. There is something for all age groups here so take into consideration the ages of your family members and what they would most want to see.

The last thing you need to keep in mind is your budget. You want to make sure that you don’t spend more then you are planning as this would just make a relaxing vacation more stressful then need be. If you keep these suggestions in mind planning your Disneyland resort vacation will be fun and keep you looking forward to your trip to the Magic Kingdom.

A Disneyland vacation can be a truly magical experience for all members of your family but many people seem to forget one part of a visit to the Magic Kingdom that will make their visit all the more special: A Disneyland Tour.

There are four different tours you can choose from but you do have to have a valid Disneyland ticket if you wish to go on one. It is also important to make a reservation for the tour you want to attend because they are popular and fill up fast.

The most popular of the tours is Disneyland’s Discover the Magic Tour. This tour is the most interactive for all family members as it gives all of you a chance to participate in a treasure hunt by finding clues with Disney characters. Not only do you get to spend time with your favorite characters but you have to outwit some of Disney’s bad guys and find the treasure before they do. It can be a truly memorable experience that includes lunch and a gift that is exclusive to those who take this tour.

There is a two ticket minimum for the Discover the Magic Tour which lasts around three hours. The first two tickets will cost $49 with additional tickets costing $39. This tour is suitable for kids 5 years old and up along with their parents.

Disney also offers a VIP tour which is designed with adults in mind. This is more of a tour for those who are interested in the history of the Disneyland theme parks, which many children would probably find rather boring. This tour must be reserved well in advance of your visit to the park and costs $75 per hour for groups of ten people or less.

If you are making your first trip to the Magic Kingdom then you should consider The Welcome to Disneyland Tour. This tour will teach you everything you need to know to get the most out of your Disney experience. You will get priority seating at one of the many stage shows, a condensed history of the park, and reserved seats at one of the parks many restaurants, two bonus FastPass tickets along with instructions on how to use them, and a lot of other goodies that will make your first Disney vacation one to remember. This is the least expensive tour at $25 per person and will last around two and a half hours.

The last tour to consider is called A Walk in Walt’s Footsteps which brings to life the vision that Walt Disney had for his theme parks. This tour is more suited to older children and adults who are interested in not only Walt’s legacy but also the history and trivia surrounding the park. It is also a chance to get a look at the exclusive Club 33. With a cost of $49 per participant and lasting more then 3 hours it is a truly unique look at Disneyland.

A Disneyland tour can add so much to your vacation memories. It is well worth the effort to ask about taking one of these tours when making your vacation plans because you never know what you may see or learn behind the scenes in the Magic Kingdom.

Designing Disney sets into history and puts into context the extraordinary contributions of the late John Hench, who, at the age of 94, still came into his office at Imagineering each day. His principles of theme park design, character design, and use of color made him a legendary figure, not only for Disney fans but also for students and aficionados of architecture, engineering, and design. Designing Disney reveals the magic behind John’s great discoveries and documents his groundbreaking in several key areas: “Design Philosophy” examines the values, attitudes, aesthetics, and logic that went into the original concepts for Disney theme parks. In “The Art of the Show” and “The Art of Color,” Hench reveals the essence of what makes the parks work so well. And in “The Art of Character,” he lets the reader in on the how and why of the Disney characters’ inherent popularity-their timeless human traits, archetypal shape and gestures that suggest these qualities graphically, and their emotional resonance in our lives. >>Read More

Imagine you’re taking a vacation to Southern California and realize you don’t have enough time to visit all of the seven world-class theme parks. What do you do? Given how much there is to see and experience in So Cal, this is not such a far-fetched dilemma.

First of all, can you name the major theme parks? It’s like naming the Seven Dwarves or Santa’s reindeer. There’s Disneyland (plus California Adventure, a worthy park in its own right), Knott’s Berry Farm (the oldest of the parks), Universal Studios Hollywood, Six Flags Magic Mountain, Sea World and Legoland (for the little ones).

The first thought would be to hit Disneyland Resort; after all, who doesn’t want to visit the original Magic Kingdom? But there’s a good chance that you’ve already been to Disneyland and maybe you should broaden your horizons-try something new. So let us do a brief comparison between Disneyland and one of the most likely alternatives, say Universal Studios Hollywood (USH).

USH has a distinct personality and offers an experience you won’t find in Anaheim. The theme park was built around a working studio and one of the defining features is the Studio Tour. You can also purchase a VIP tour that really immerses you in the movie-making process. Disney offers nothing comparable to this.

In fact Disney is all about carefully creating and maintaining that fantasy façade-a wonderful pretend world where backstage activities are hidden from the “guests.” Universal Studios revels in showing you the magic behind the scenes. The Studio Tour, Waterworld Stunt Show and other smaller shows let you see back stage very clearly.

Both parks employ lovable characters in the public relations department. Disneyland has the Seven Dwarfs; USH has Ghostbusters. Anaheim has Goofy; Hollywood has Homer Simpson. Disneyland puts up Minnie Mouse and it’s answered by Betty Boop. Disney movies vs. Universal Pictures. There’s Indiana Jones vs. The Mummy’s Revenge.

In Anaheim you’ll catch the evening fireworks and the Fantasmic show; in Hollywood you’ll catch the Blues Brothers tribute show. For shopping, dining and street entertainment there’s Downtown Disney…or there’s Universal City Walk. Overall, Disney probably wins but Universal Studios does give them a run for their money.

Your vacation schedule could affect your decision. You probably need the better part of two days to really see Disneyland. A single long day at USH will most likely do the job unless the lines are really long. You might be frustrated with a single day in Anaheim-especially with Disney’s California Adventure next door (which we aren’t even talking about here). Bottom line: if you really don’t have enough time to do the Magic Kingdom justice, it may be a better call to have a great single day at Universal Studios.

Both parks offer fun for visitors of all ages. But, you’ll not find quite as much at USH for very small children. On a hot summer day, Universal could be tough on toddlers in strollers. They won’t appreciate spending as much time on the tour or shows as your older children. On the other hand, Disneyland is more expensive overall. If the budget is a significant issue, Universal Studios could save you a bit of money.

Fifty years ago, Walt Disney utterly transformed the concept of outdoor entertainment venues from tawdry carnivals and seedy amusement piers called “amusement parks,” to an entirely new destination that would come into common vernacular as the “theme park.” Although Disneyland was the inspiration of one man, Walt did not achieve this history-altering concept on his own. Using his innate talent for combining disparate skills and personalities, he assembled a creative team that blended imagination with engineering. Walt called this group his “Imagineers.” Walt Disney’s Legends of Imagineering and the Genesis of the Disney Theme Park introduces a core group of the originators of Disneyland and the other Disney parks. It explores their individual relationships with Walt and each other, their creative breakthroughs and failures, and their rivalries and professional politics. This candid narrative of their lives and contributions to a very special form of entertainment illustrates why, half a century later, their work continues to be vital and important to millions of people every day, and all over the world. Lavishly illustrated throughout with rare and never-before-seen artwork and photographs, Walt Disney’s Legends of Imagineering and the Genesis of the Disney Theme Park will further enrich the reader’s appreciation of the exceptional talent behind Disneyland’s creation and ongoing evolution. >>Read More
